Fab autumn wedding at the Step House, Borris

documentary wedding photography

February 28, 2024 by Kevin Morris

Was delighted to be back at the Stephouse in Borris for the wonderful day when Aisling & Alan tied the knot. Both Aisling & Alan were getting ready in the village, the ceremony was in the hotel and the gardens provided a beautiful autumn backdrop for the photos. Such a nice, welcoming and laid back couple with an easy brief, not too much posing, not too much fuss, capture the day as it unfolds, perfect for my style.

I was so happy to hear back from them :

“We were absolutely delighted with the photos and you managed to get everything we asked for. The photos weren’t too posed which is exactly what we wanted. You were discreet the entire day and very patient with us when we were distracted with our guests.  The whole day from start to finish went so smoothly!”
Aisling & Alan

See below for a few photos from the day – hope you enjoy !

Three sisters, three weddings !! As with all wedding suppliers, good reviews are our lifeblood, but even better are recommendations to friends or family. I figure I must be doing something right as after Siobhan received her photos her sister Ciara quickly got in touch (a big fan of relaxed photos !!) followed by their other sister Paula. It was so lovely to shoot all the weddings (each one different from the next) and spend time with such a lovely family.

Even better, starting with Siobhan, due to recommendations to their group of friends, I shot another 13 weddings (at last count). I should be paying the Fannings commission !!!!

Charline & Romain travelled over from Brittany with their two children for a Celtic Ceremony in Brigits Garden, just outside Oughertard, Co Galway.

The west of Ireland can sometimes be unpredictable weatherwise but we had a stunning day. Blue skies and butterflies accompanied us for the ceremony in the stone circle with numerous blessings and old traditions it was a lovely afternoon. We then headed over the mountains to the town of Spiddal where the weather stayed dry but the clouds rolled in over Galway Bay giving us some moody images.

Despite the language barriers (my French leaves a lot to be desired !) we had a wonderful time together and I was delighted to hear back from them :

Hi Kevin!

Thank you very much for the link! the photos are amazing! We loved to remember these precious moments. Our trip in Ireland was exceptional and we will have great memories thank to you.

We’ll say hello to you if we’ll make a new trip in your country and I promise our English will be better!!!

Thanks thanks thanks!!!

It’s an overused phrase, but it’s also what we build our foundation on – not being keen on being in front of the camera myself, I fully know the importance of making the photos as easy and natural as possible, plus it also get the “real” emotions and laughs and, in the process hopefully captures your personality.

Don’t just take my word for it though – I recently had the pleasure of shooting Vanessa & Daniels wedding down in Co Limerick and, although only having seen a few shots, I was thrilled to hear from them :

“Thank you so much again for everything Kevin, nothing I say can do justice to how brilliant you were. Was just talking earlier about how we didn’t even realise some of these photos were being taken, you were so natural and not intrusive at all – it made for some of the most amazing shots because I feel like you really captured the essence of myself and Dan’s relationship ?“

An overused phrase, but an underappreciated art.

When I shoot a wedding, apart from the traditional “must have” shots, along with some timeless couple photos I love to include as many candid or documentary shots as possible. These photos capture the little moments, the unexpected laughs, the tender interactions and tell a different side of your days story.

I tend to keep these photos black and white, no distracting colours, just a classic image telling a story or, as they say, capturing a moment.

The key to a lot of these images is to try be in the right place, at the right time, so whereas they might not be technically perfect they provide exactly what you are looking for.

To consider documentary / candid images as supplementary to the “main” images is incorrect in my opinion. I actually feel that they are complimentary and help build up a true reflection and storyline of your big day.

Had a wonderful day shooting Niamh & Cullens wedding this summer. From the warm welcome, the endless laughs, the tears (good ones !) the attention to detail, the fab venue and the stunning weather it really was a day to remember. Hopefully the attached photos will give you an Idea. We specialise in natural and relaxed wedding photography, documenting your day through timeless images.
