Moments

informal wedding photography

January 27, 2014 by Kevin Morris

Having gone through the details, and some bride & groom portraiture, it’s now time to have a look at those “moments”. Those moments that no-one notices, or that go in the blink of an eye, immortalized by a split second photograph.  Capturing your guests & family and their personalities, Sometimes thought provoking, perhaps romantic, occasionally cute,  but most of the time just plain funny, these are the type of images that I love.

I like to think that the main photos of the happy couple, their bridal party, families & friends are the cornerstones of wedding photography but the “moments” (or reportage images) are the mortar that holds them together, building up a full and detailed account of the day, not just in poses, but in atmosphere, in fun, in laughs…….in moments. These are the images that are not posed, but reflect the day in little glimpses.

Most of these images are from 2013, but I couldn’t help but add in a few all time favorites.

Hope you enjoy. (Just click on the play icon on the bottom right to start the show)

For my second blog of 2014 I thought I would shine some light on my views on wedding couple photography.  Most couples these days, while wanting top quality photos, wish to spend as much time as possible with their guests, so, before the day, I draft up a “plan” for timings and maybe locations if appropriate, and also a “wet weather” plan so, on the day the photos go as smoothly as possible with little or no time lost. Rather than overly pose couples, I prefer to keep my distance and, if applicable, incorporate as much of the landscape / hotel grounds into the images. I also move in close for maybe 2/3 photos but keep these to a minimum (unless specific requests have been made).

For most couples about 30 mins on the day is plenty for couple photography and I tend to split this up into 2 sessions – the first on location or in the hotel grounds and the second session just before the meal is called for . This always proves very popular with couples as it gives them a chance to catch their breath and spend some quiet time together.

See attached slideshow of a selection of couple shots from 2013 – just a small collection from various weddings throughout  the year .

One of the regular questions I get asked is if I take the “family” shots.  Yes, I love documentary photography, and no, I’m not a big fan of overly posed images…….but I’m a big fan of balance. So, while I take some shots of the fun during the preparations, I don’t forget the shoes & the dress, and whereas I prefer to direct rather than pose couples, I still try to get some “timeless” bride and groom images, and yes, I do get the all important “family” shots, but I don’t drag out the whole affair till everyone has a pain in their face ! As I said, it’s all about balance, and delivering a selection of images to each couple which represents an accurate reflection of their big day both posed & unposed.

Check out the attached slideshow with a selection of images, some documentary and some (slightly) posed.

Unfortunately, due to a rather busy summer season I have neglected the blog & updates etc. So, I have a selection of images from some of my summer weddings. This is by no means a “best of” or a “top 30” just a few images which show my style (and the bride & grooms style !!) and how it can be adapted to your wedding. From detail shots, informal portraits, documentary and even a few “semi” traditional pics thrown in. Hope you enjoy – just hit the play icon at the bottom right to set the show off.

Thanks

Kevin

I was really looking for to Jenny & Ossians wedding as I had never shot in the stunning Moyvalley Hotel before. Unfortunately the weather misbehaved, but, to make matters worse, Jenny told me when I arrived that she had slipped 2 discs in her back the day before !! I needn’t have worried however, as neither the bad weather, nor the slipped discs could put a dampener on a wonderful day. From the intimate ceremony, the stunning location (indoor & out) and the general feel good atmosphere on the day it flew by in a blink of an eye with everyone having a fabulous time. Hopefully the few shots below can give you an idea of the day. Just click on the “play” icon on the bottom right to start the slideshow.

Always nice when couples take the time to write with thanks when they receive their album. Arrived home from shooting a wedding and this was sitting in my inbox – made my evening !!

Dear Kevin
Myself and Donny have just returned from holidays to a wonderful surprise from you. Thank you so much! The album is absolutely stunning all of the photos you included are fantastic and it is put together really beautifully. Everyone we have showed it so far has been very impressed.
I can’t believe our day was over 9 months ago, it has flown by! Your album brought it all back and it was great to go through it. We are delighted that we chose you as our photographer, and all our family and friends have also commented on how great you were. You weren’t intrusive at all, yet managed to capture all those special moments. All of the photos really capture our day and the style of photography is exactly what we wanted. So a big massive heartfelt thank you once again, and we would have no hesitation in recommending you to everyone!
Best Wishes
Marion and Donny
