Ciara & Aaron at Bloomfield House

irish wedding photographer

August 22, 2024 by Kevin Morris

Had a great time at Bloomfield House with Ciara & Aaron. They wanted a laid back and unfussed day with plenty of time to mingle with their guests and, despite the heavy rain, it didn’t dampen spirits with lots of smiles & laughs from start to finish.

After the meal, the clouds parted for a short while and we took a risk and headed down to the lake and were rewarded with some fabulous light before the showers rolled in again.

Capture the moment is an often overused photography expression, but it describes documentary/reportage photography perfectly. These are fleeting moments, missed by many but, thanks to photography now captured forever. The day goes by so fast for each couple, it’s nice to be able to look back on those little interactions, laughs, tears & hugs that they missed or went so quickly they had forgotten about.

My style on the day is to try keep everything as documentary as possible, whereas I still get all those “must have” shots and am more than happy to try get specific shots wanted by each couple, I prefer a fly on the wall approach and capturing the day as it unfolds.

I also prefer most of my documentary shots to be in Black & White – the viewer is not distracted by colours and the focus is on the moment. Colour versions are always available if required !!

Let’s face it, not everyone likes being in front of the camera, especially on your wedding day when you want to mingle with your family & friends and not spend all day hanging out with your photographer !!

I specialise in stress free photography, less of the stiff poses and more of a documentary style of photos. Blending into the background I capture the day as it unfolds and while we still get all the “must have” shots alongside some timeless couple shots, it’s all done with the minimum of fuss giving plenty of time for couples to chill with their guests and enjoy their day.

See below for just a few lines of feedback from happy couples.

“We didn’t even realise some of these photos were being taken, you were so natural and not intrusive at all” Vanessa & Dan

“He managed to capture the essence of our day perfectly, all while being invisible !!” Amy & Richelle

“Thank you so much for the amazing photography and thank you for being so easy-going and relaxed”. Aileen & Colm.

“Thanks again for the way you approached the day and for the way you made everyone so comfortable & relaxed.” Niamh & Greg

“It was only when we saw the photos that we realised he had a birds eye view and caought so many of the candid moments, he put us all at ease and was great to have around on the day” Helena & Joe

It’s an overused phrase, but it’s also what we build our foundation on – not being keen on being in front of the camera myself, I fully know the importance of making the photos as easy and natural as possible, plus it also get the “real” emotions and laughs and, in the process hopefully captures your personality.

Don’t just take my word for it though – I recently had the pleasure of shooting Vanessa & Daniels wedding down in Co Limerick and, although only having seen a few shots, I was thrilled to hear from them :

“Thank you so much again for everything Kevin, nothing I say can do justice to how brilliant you were. Was just talking earlier about how we didn’t even realise some of these photos were being taken, you were so natural and not intrusive at all – it made for some of the most amazing shots because I feel like you really captured the essence of myself and Dan’s relationship ?“

One of the fun parts of my regular backups & archives is revisiting of weddings I have shot in the past. It is interesting to see how, or if my style changes over the years. I found with my recent archive that my style of relaxed and stress free photography has been present in my weddings for most of my years doing this gig full time (and I love an aul walking shot !!)

My first few weddings were on medium format film cameras, 12 shots per roll of film so my camera bag was full of film and not full of gear ! The advent of high quality digital cameras made such a difference though in how I shoot weddings. They gave me the freedom of travelling light, (medium format cameras were big beasts !) being able to capture a lot more images without having to worry about changing film, and the ability to develop my own images right on the computer screen – a real game changer.

However, using film cameras stood me in good stead, each camera click was a cost so I had to know my composition and posing down to the smallest of details. This background now enables me to be able to mix my love of candid and documentary shots along with the odd more traditional pose ensuring that I deliver a well balanced selection of images detailing the whole day as it unfolds.

See below for just a few shots I pulled from my recent archive – hope you enjoy 🙂

It’s surprising the amount of couples who feel nervous and/or uncomfortable about getting their photos taken. “We hate getting our photos taken” or “We don’t want to spend all day away from our guests” are two of the most common worries we hear from couples.

Luckily we specialise in making the photos as stress free and relaxed as possible (even a bit of fun !!) and we don’t make a song and dance about it, nor do we take all day. Our goal on each wedding day is to blend into the background, but be available for direction when required, maximise the time each couple gets to spend with their guests but without any compromise on quality, and to present each couple with a fab selection of images, telling the story of their day.

If this sounds like what you are looking for just get in touch through the contact page with your details and we’ill get back to you asap – we would love to hear from you.
