Micro Weddings – Not as new as you think

Kilronan Castle Wedding

June 16, 2020 by Kevin Morris

With the current C-19 restrictions and lockdown many couples have had to sadly postpone their big day to later in 2020 or to 2021. However, some are deciding to tie the knot on their original day and opting for a micro-wedding within the current guidelines and social distancing etiquette. It may surprise many, but micro-weddings have been around for years in Ireland.  Mainly these would be considered “elopement weddings” and traditionally would be foreign couples coming to Ireland to take their vows, but I have also covered many weddings for Irish couples with a small and intimate ceremony followed by a meal with family and a party for friends at a later stage. What a nice idea this is, you can still have your official wedding, albeit in a much more intimate fashion, and follow up when restrictions are lifted with a big party for friends & family, and you can always do a vow renewal ceremony on your “party day” to make it a full day experience.

Five years ago Liz and Travis traveled from California to get married in Kilronan Castle, there was just the two of them, Travis’ mam and stepdad, the celebrant, the musician and myself. The ceremony was recorded for youtube and was going to be uploaded later that day (no live streaming technology back then !), Travis’ mam & stepdad renewed their vows and I was roped in to do a reading “as gaeilge” as no-one else knew Irish ! What a wonderful day we had.

Mayo is fast becoming my second home for weddings – I regularly find myself heading along the N5 out west and for Ashlyn & Bennys wedding it was the first time I visited Swinford. Relaxed and easygoing are often overused terms, but it was so much the case on this day. Quick visit to both the girls and the boys, lovely ceremony and then on to Knockranny Woods on the way to Kilronan Castle. The weather was perfect and the craic was great as the day turned into evening. Ashlyn & Benny chose the essential plus package up to the dancing and I was delighted as the dancing on clouds was a surprise (and a first time) for me so the fabulous first dance rounded off the day nicely. Hopefully the photos below will give you an idea of the day.

On the 13th May I headed up to the fab Kilronan Castle for the wedding of Liz & Travis. This was a wedding with a difference as the happy couple travelled over from southern California, along with Travis’ mam Cathy and stepdad Richard….and that was it !! When myself, the celebrant and the guitarist were added it was a total of 7 in attendance. It made for a lovely celebration and with Cathy & Richard renewing their vows a very special occasion.  Even I had my part to play as neither the celebrant (English) nor the guitarist (Scottish) could handle the Irish wedding blessing that Liz & Travis chose for their ceremony. So I stood up & volunteered 🙂  Trying to channel my inner Aragorn reading Elvish I probably came off more like Bosco on acid……but no-one noticed !!  It was a really lovely,  intimate (and a little bit mad) day and I was delighted to be involved. Hopefully you will enjoy the few pics attached.

Took a long drive up to Kilronan Castle to photograph the wedding of Ciara & David. Stunning venue, lovely couple and welcoming families & guests – throw in a couple of slightly mad bridesmaids, and Irelands victory in Paris to clinch the 6 nations and you had the recipe for a fabulous day all round. Hopefully, the small selection of images does the day justice.
