Jane & Barry – Retro Chic at Horetown House

retro wedding

April 11, 2020 by Kevin Morris

One from the archives, but one that stays in the memory is Jane & Barrys big day at Horetown House.  Such a happy wonderful day filled with laughter, tears and fabulous personal touches designed by the very talented Jane. From the vintage 20’s wedding dress, through to the stunning table plan it really was a photographers dream, add in one of my favourite venues, Horetown House, a warm welcome and neverending smiles and it really was a bit of a Carlsberg moment ! Hopefully the images below will give you a flavour of the day.

I always like visiting new venues and was so pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Ashley Park House for the first time. Such a wonderful lakeside venue which matched Martina & Steves retro vibe so well. I had met Martina & Steve a couple of times, firstly over coffee and then out along the beach for an engagement shoot so I knew that it was going to be a very relaxed affair. From the preps in the blink and you miss them Lough Derg Cottages in Puckaun, right up to the dancing, the whole thing was stress free and quite informal, and we even got a few shots between the speeches and dancing, just before the rain started. Have a look through the images below, hopefully they capture the vibe and atmosphere of the day.

I had photographed the wedding of Grainnes sister, Yvonne a couple of years ago and when I arrived for the preps my photos were all over the walls !!! So, although I was delighted to see them, I also felt a wave of pressure to deliver !! I needn’t have worried as I was made feel at home from I walked in the door, and, with all of Grainne & Johns planning the small details were all laid out and beautifully presented. The wedding lent itself to its location n Wrights Anglers rest, intimate with a bit of a shabby chic feeling to it. The “goodie” table was laid out with all sorts of cakes, biscuits and sweet things, so much so that the guests were afraid to eat them, which was a result for me as I bagged me a few treats (with permission) for the trip home.

I was delighted to hear back from Grainne & John this morning :

“Hi Kevin,
Sorry for only getting back to you now, busy weekend! Well we are so thrilled with our pictures! Firstly thank you for presenting them in such a unique gorgeous way! So so pretty!
The pictures really portrayed our day perfectly, just great fun! They really captured the vibe we had for our wedding, rustic, vintage, country & low key. There are so many fab & quirky pics that we just love especially of John & I inside the venue.
We have such gorgeous pics with nearly every special person that was at our wedding & we’ll be able to cherish all those memories so thank you so much again. Everyone just looks so happy. We are getting great feed back on them, I shared some on FB. So thank you Kevin, we are delighted.com!
Take care & keep up the great work ?
Grainne & John xo “

One word can sum up Marion & Donnys wedding – WOW !! From the individual touches, handmade candles, cool retro table planner, fab wedding car (Citroen CX), the stunning venue (Bellinter House) through to the extremely helpful staff, I could go on, as even the weather got in on the act and behaved !!  A lovely ceremony was held in Culmullen Church followed by champers in the grounds of the hotel. Before we knew it, the guests were heading into the marquee allowing Marion & Donny a bit of “chill-out” time before the partying resumed.

I have a small selection of photos from the day below, just click on the play icon in the bottom right and there is also an option for full screen (although some image quality will be lost), and, if you know either Marion, Donny (or both !!) feel free to leave a comment for them.

Its hard to know where to start when describing Sinead & Jasons big day ! The heavy rain had been so persistent that I had Captain Nemo on standby to make sure I could get where I needed to be.  Sinead looked stunning in her 1920s inspired wedding dress (and super hair & make-up) and the bridemaids weren’t half bad either in their Charleston styled dresses !!! Things got a little confusing on arrival at the church as there were six of the main guests called Kevin, so, including myself, that was seven !! Every time the name was called, we all answered. After the lovely ceremony in Clondalkin church it was off to the stunning Killashee House Hotel in Naas. With the rotten weather we couldn’t use the fantastic gardens for photos but everyone was in great form and it was the little touches that made this wedding so special. Along with the 20’s theme, the reception had an 80’s vibe going through it, lifesize cutouts of Rambo & Michael Jackson stood by the dancefloor, along with a particularly scary one of the Hoff, He-Man & She-Ra guarded the loos, the placenames were among the coolest I have ever seen, the favours were little boxes of retro sweets, and the caketopper was made by Sinead. Jason told me that Sinead also made each of the placenames, favours etc. so perhaps a career in wedding planning beckons !! I have uploaded a few photos from the day below, and, if you happen to know the couple, please leave a comment as they will be checking in while away on honeymoon. Just click on any photo for a slightly larger version.

I was a bit apprehensive arriving to photograph the wedding of Hazel & Kieran last Saturday – 28th May. For some reason, Hazel had a fear of getting her photo taken and had basically told me that she really didn’t want any pics taken of her !! I don’t know why she was so nervous as she looked fab, turning up in a Delorean which was in keeping with the eighties theme of the wedding. The tables were all dressed with retro sweets & pin badges, they even managed to find those red plastic fish that curl up and tell you your fortune. The table plan was done up in an A-Team style, there was a frame at the bottom of the stairs & props for polaroid shots of the (willing) guests in various poses, and it was all set off by the lads and their simple dress code – wear your converse. The simple yet touching ceremony was held in a marquee on the grounds of Malahide Rugby Club with the reception being held in the clubhouse, and, the day went so well, with such a relaxed atmosphere (helped by the 99’s on demand) that Hazel did let me take a few shots of herself & Kieran and I think you will agree that they look great together (check out the shoes !). So, if you have a problem (such as being camera shy), if no-one else can help and if you can find me, maybe you can hire me and watch as my plan comes together !

I am really looking forward to processing the images from this unique wedding, but, for the time being, I have uploaded a few draft shots below. Just click on any of them for a (slightly) larger version. Hope you enjoy.
